so NOT your grandma's...........

 rocker!

i literally have my grandmother's rocker, however, sitting in storage along with fond memories of rocking away whilst scarfing down hershey kisses (yes, the rocker sat right next to a side table with an never-ending supply of kisses; she loved her chocolate!). she's sadly, passed, but precious memories reside as does her wooden rocker!

today's rockers function the same, yet look quite different: refreshed, new, trendy AND the perfect third chair in a living room!

btw: these new-age rockers are seldom called "rockers",... file them under "loungers"!

 dwr risom rocker scandinavian-designed comfy...

if low maintence and iconic is your thing, then this eames would fit the bill...

CB2's comfy version designed by a design student, taeyoung choi, at the school of art in chicago (great idea) who came up with an ergonomic back that traces the shape of the human body and allows you to become totally immersed in the chair,......

crate and barrel's version,... very gentlemanly in black & white,...

IKEA's versions-- you can count on innovative, streamlined, and cost-efficient rockers,........

from land of nod , these are the grown-up versions that are also available for the kiddos...

selections by all modern,  love the macrame-strung back....

anthropologie's offerings, especially love the smooth brass handles...

llbean's is attractive in black, love the contoured back, probably intended for outdoor porch-rocking, yet i would bring it inside add a seat cushion and/or a sheepskin throw and it's a statement-making seat....

eddie bauer's version.......

pottery barn kids......

altough these two versions are rockers, i feel these are cheating on the real rocker look, they're more like an upholstered chair with the after thought of a rocker base,... just my opinion!

take your rocker any way you can-- cramped space, apartment-living? then, how sweet are these mini-rocking birds from west elm? ...one in every color for me!

there's something so lulling about the sound of every rock against a hard wood floor, especially, isnt there?

so i've inspired myself to dig out my memere's, for sure-- i will add a seat cusion, however (a simple to do)! grandma's rocker will have a new place of pride in my living room, especially around the holidays, an extra seat is a welcome to family and friends, or.....

rockers-even, maybe especially even- grandma's rocker, rocks in 2016!

this thing,.........

image

is a thaaaang!

worry beads, prayers beads, string-o-beads; whatever you want to call them.......

adorn your mantle with a long string of them as a garland (festoon them on the xmas tree come december)...

drape effortlessly atop books on a bookcase......

bring them outdoors.......

image

atop books once again... hardcover books are always in my design arsenal!

image

pretty bowls that are just begging for attention sit nicely within-- but please keep some beads spilling over!

image

or not, if you are the tidy type!

...got a door handle?

image

my favorite-- as a necklace holder on a bust or draped upon yours, statement jewelry......

no bust? then an artsy gooseneck bottle will do....

image

soooo where can you get your hands on this affordable-earthy-organic thing?

not-to-worry: etsy shops are the go-to,...

and if you're are the crafty type, then it's a quick trip down to Michaels or your favorite craft store,... and have-some-fun!

there HAS to be a spot in your home for a string-o-beads, i am partial to the natural smooth wood beads, but let your imagination dictate,.....

seeking CLARITY in the new year........

ACRYLIC~

acrylic pieces add a touch of modern, clean simplicity, and a hip factor (like being in with the cool kids,...) not to mention functionality (easy care)!

but what i like most about acrylic pieces is the statement-making see-thru-ness that allows the other furniture pieces to have their moment. ohhh,.... and it's perfect for small spaces--light and airy, no congestion! ohhh,... there's more-- it doesn't vie with your color scheme........

has your mail box been stuffed with all the shiny new home catalogues yet? mine has, and acrylic pieces abound for the 2016,... even though the origin lies back to the past (1930)-- so that makes it a classic!

some affordable and accessible pieces from the mainstay design catalogues (hover over picts for links),..........

ballard design.........

...not at all competing with that-beauty-of-a-rug, yet still a wow piece in its own right!

pottery barn (branchin' out a bit, kind of a new look for them),........

...this drinks table is anchored with a gutsy black iron base, if you can't do the all-acrylic-thing, this is perfect!

...too fun, love the citrusy, preppy pops of color! perfect at the end of a bed, or--

...a simple clean waterfall-edge side table

west elm....

...this pendant is perfect if you don't want to obstruct your sight line & bonus points for the pretty reflection on your ceilings when lit at nite!

...for that new year organized and uncluttered feel in your home office, i strive!

trays trays trays, can't have enough on hand, ever!

...an interesting shelf

cb2...........

...love his console for a narrow entry, esp if you have abeautiful wall papered wall that you just don't want to hide (btw: saw the same console at HG just this week!)

...another interesting shelf, a ledge actually, lean your art work or photos on for maximum wow.

...for those sunday morning breakfasts in bed prepared by your loving partner (think valentine's day coming soon!)

wisteria (a unique home decor catalogue)....

...love love LOVE these ghost columns (and columns in general), great for showcasing a special object-- these would be super in front of & centered on a window!

...a functional storage trunk, stuff pretty pillows or throws inside or..., could also be used as a side table showcasing a few fab finds...rope handles add an organic touch to the modernity!

...these acrylic stools are just perfect in this narrow kitchen space and add to the somewhat contemporary feel!
seeking CLARITY is easy,..... WHY NOT RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH it?

to reclaim........

WOOD, that is!

i love everything about this: eco conscious, attractive, rustic, brings a raw organic and warm vibe to a room. every room needs a touch of real, unadulterated wood......

ok, so what is real-unadulterated wood? no, it's not x-rated! in all seriousness, it's all the burls, knots, worm holes, unfinished natural (or live) edges, natural holes & cracks,...

the pioneer of fine hand crafterd furniture utilizing raw wood was george nakashima way back in the '40's. he was known for leaving the live-edge of the wood into the design of his furniture pieces. his signature woodworking design was a large-scaled table constucted of a huge wood slab with smooth wood tops and live edges consisting of multiple slabs joined together (without glue or nails) with butterfly joints. how beautiful! he believed that there is a soul in every tree that can continue to live in every piece of furniture,...

                                                                                                                                 via

if you have a cool $45k and are interested in an original nakashima table, bid now!

not too long ago it was a "custom thing",... no longer-- rough wood is just about main streamed ( a tell-tale sign is when there are a plethora of natural-edged products filling the aisles at homegoods),.....just another trend in the design world! a worthwhile one i might add,... a juMp-on-board purchase!

take a look at some beautiful & attainable dining tables.......

RH modern:

...the wythe-- a dark walnut wood top, live-edged, with polished brass base; love the mix of natural warm wood with a glossy metal!

 west elm:

...the emmerson-- made fron unfinished reclaimed pine (reclaimed from a variety of sources such as old shipping & packing palettes)!

anthropologie:

...the lacquered elm dining table--made from reclaimed pine with an interesting and practical take, a lacquered top!

cb2:

...it's all about the "living grain" of this "plantation grown sheesham wood planks"-- simplicity at its finest!

crate and barrel:

...a dark walnut beauty that employs the nakashima method of wood-on-wood butterfly joinery!

the BIG SIR a long-standing favorite of mine (a c&b classic)-- made of sustainable solid european white oak & the legs are made of a single piece of heartwood exposing the trunks inner rings!

pottery barn:

...the griffin reclaimed wood dining table-- made from reclaimed pine; love the gutsy iron base!

just breath-taking eating spots:

...really stunning AND creative dining table that is cantilevered off a marble cooktop!

..a mix of genres in this dining room-- a well-worn persian carpet, modern art, mid-century leather chairs,... love!

...perhaps nowhere is live-edge more in its element than an outdoor dining spot, right? ...brick, iron, moss, greenery!

the musket room in nyc-- their live-edge wood bar is a stunner, actually EVERY-thing about this restaurant is AMAZE-ing; i could go on&on&on-- look at that floor mix of resurfaced hardwood and scalloped tile beneath the bar seats, the large greens in clear vases, the lamps perched on the bar for ambient lighting,... I WANT TO GO THERE!

reclaimed, live-edged, sustainable,... even though it is trending,... not going anywhere, ~

image

the best part of the table (reclaimed, live-edge, or NOT) is the stime spent sharing of food, laughter, stories, with family and the people you love~

near, dear, and far: happy thanksgiving to all~
