to reclaim........

WOOD, that is!

i love everything about this: eco conscious, attractive, rustic, brings a raw organic and warm vibe to a room. every room needs a touch of real, unadulterated wood......

ok, so what is real-unadulterated wood? no, it's not x-rated! in all seriousness, it's all the burls, knots, worm holes, unfinished natural (or live) edges, natural holes & cracks,...

the pioneer of fine hand crafterd furniture utilizing raw wood was george nakashima way back in the '40's. he was known for leaving the live-edge of the wood into the design of his furniture pieces. his signature woodworking design was a large-scaled table constucted of a huge wood slab with smooth wood tops and live edges consisting of multiple slabs joined together (without glue or nails) with butterfly joints. how beautiful! he believed that there is a soul in every tree that can continue to live in every piece of furniture,...

                                                                                                                                 via

if you have a cool $45k and are interested in an original nakashima table, bid now!

not too long ago it was a "custom thing",... no longer-- rough wood is just about main streamed ( a tell-tale sign is when there are a plethora of natural-edged products filling the aisles at homegoods),.....just another trend in the design world! a worthwhile one i might add,... a juMp-on-board purchase!

take a look at some beautiful & attainable dining tables.......

RH modern:

...the wythe-- a dark walnut wood top, live-edged, with polished brass base; love the mix of natural warm wood with a glossy metal!

 west elm:

...the emmerson-- made fron unfinished reclaimed pine (reclaimed from a variety of sources such as old shipping & packing palettes)!

anthropologie:

...the lacquered elm dining table--made from reclaimed pine with an interesting and practical take, a lacquered top!

cb2:

...it's all about the "living grain" of this "plantation grown sheesham wood planks"-- simplicity at its finest!

crate and barrel:

...a dark walnut beauty that employs the nakashima method of wood-on-wood butterfly joinery!

the BIG SIR a long-standing favorite of mine (a c&b classic)-- made of sustainable solid european white oak & the legs are made of a single piece of heartwood exposing the trunks inner rings!

pottery barn:

...the griffin reclaimed wood dining table-- made from reclaimed pine; love the gutsy iron base!

just breath-taking eating spots:

...really stunning AND creative dining table that is cantilevered off a marble cooktop!

..a mix of genres in this dining room-- a well-worn persian carpet, modern art, mid-century leather chairs,... love!

...perhaps nowhere is live-edge more in its element than an outdoor dining spot, right? ...brick, iron, moss, greenery!

the musket room in nyc-- their live-edge wood bar is a stunner, actually EVERY-thing about this restaurant is AMAZE-ing; i could go on&on&on-- look at that floor mix of resurfaced hardwood and scalloped tile beneath the bar seats, the large greens in clear vases, the lamps perched on the bar for ambient lighting,... I WANT TO GO THERE!

reclaimed, live-edged, sustainable,... even though it is trending,... not going anywhere, ~

image

the best part of the table (reclaimed, live-edge, or NOT) is the stime spent sharing of food, laughter, stories, with family and the people you love~

near, dear, and far: happy thanksgiving to all~

i'm blushing over,.........

BLUSH!

or,...... champagne, petal, pale pink. it's super trending right now. watch, you'll notice it creeping up everywhere, down-right staring you in the face via fashion (clothing, handbags, shoes, accessories) and home decor (RH, west elm, cb2,... to name a few),... trust me!

i hesitate to call this subltle pink sweet, yet it is, not in the conventional sense (all sugary & girly); yet sweet as in cool & happening, it's sophisticated and as of presently-- on trend,... trust me!

it is also warm, timeless and suits any room in the house,... looks beautiful with dark antiquey-wood furniture as well as crisp whites,... softens modern angles,.. try mixing it up with it's metalllic sister- copper, or silver, bronze, black, brass........ you'll never tire of it! trust me..

ben moore's old country, one my personal favorites

or ben moore's puppy paws (who can resist a puppy paw hug?)

f&b's pink ground

bedrooms: the obvious choice,...... (i have paired it in my own master with dark browns, golds, ivory and brass &, after 5 years, i still love!)

classic in feel with dark woods, brass nailheads,.....

i'm obsessed, paired with brass,.......

in a romantic wallpaper: classic & traditional,........

the color completely enhances the amazing ceiling architecture,...

it also swings contemporary,.....

living rooms and family rooms: fun, cozy and happy--

love the pops of blush in the accessories & soft treatments: eclectic,.....

in a clean-lined sofa: mid-century mod,........

in the pillows (monogolian fur: soft, fluffy, statement-making) & flowers: tailored and crisp,...

i would over-stay my welcome here for sure!... relaxed & comfy!

the entry: embracing, as an entry should be--

warm & rich, paired with navy and dark woods,.....

riveting in a large-scaled piece of contemporary art,.....

the kitchen and dining areas---

hip, fun blush painted windsor chairs: i'd love to saddle up to this table,....

in a contemporary kitchen via the chandelier and cabinets: unique & stylish, again with navy,...

although the walls are swathed in blush and the statement copper globe fixtures(blush-ish) & the dining chair, it is NOT blush-overload, just warm & inviting; wouldn't you like to take a seat?

a homey shabby-chicness, a-la rachel ashwell,.....

the bath: warm, soothing and so flattering!

love the idea of an oriental rug in the bath:red paired with pinks,.....

stunning: the blush walls enhance the architecture of this drop-dead bath,......

another beautiful bath: the ceiling heights and architecture again emphased by the pale pink,...

the office:

ok, so this is feminine! the reflective elements in this office space only enhance the warmth,...

shy about committing to entire walls? a few accent pieces is all it takes,....

in this case: blush cups & plates act as a foil amongst all the white dinnerware and chippy white hutch,...

a blush painted windsor chair (side chairs are so versatile) & a touch of blue,.....

perfect for the upcoming holiday season! be the hostess with the mostest!

fabulous paired with brass/gold-toned cutlery (obsessed with this pairing!). love the simple sprigs of greens (eucalyptus as runner--brilliant) & the pink himalayan pink sea salt set out-- a creative detail!

a sampling of blush, from a few of my favorite design catalogues:

west elm:

the martini side table-- this is one of my favorite side tables for any room; i spec to almost every client: versatile/mobile, functional, chic, affordable and now in BLUSH & antique brass top (ohhh, that combo)!

anthropologie:

give blush a try,... maybe you already have a few decorative pieces in storage or an old side chair that needs an update,... you always need new kitchen wash towels, right? or,...how about a half-dozen or so pink macaroons set out on a white vintage platter? it is that easy to be on-trend!

............can you see why i'm blushing over BLUSH?

hi there, remember me?

i've been MIA for too long! here and back-at-it! have to: my mind is always churning design to the point of imploding,.....

i have,................

image

and because,..........

image

let just say, it-is, what-it-is,.........

image

sooooo,.... i'm giving it away-- "it" being whatever design-related topic i'm throwing around in my head!.........

"fab-5" morphs straight to "the blog" -- going simple (ok, not a very creative moniker,... i'll save the creativity for my blog entries)!

enjoy my first entry under the blog...

~a personal design project~

an easy DIY, yet one that takes courage because there's no turning back once you start it,... whitewashing our fireplace ugly brick in the living room (i had already done the same in our keeping room & love it, sooo why was i dragging my feet on this one????).........

before: nothing special, right?

after: whitewashed & done........

the how-to is simple:

  • i first cleaned the brick by vacumming, then sponged it down with warm water until clean
  • next came the fun stuff: i liquified Ben Moore's simply white in an eggshell finish (a light warm white i use a lot) to a stain-like consistency
  • i applied the watery, white paint directly onto the brick with a wide paint brush using left to right swaths--  making sure to get into the crevices
  • let it dry overnight
  • next day: i took a rough sanding block to the white brick here-there-and-anywhere, eyeballing to create what looks like old, weather-worn brick (see last image below)
  • cleaned the residue off the brick by vacumming & then sponging down with warm water
  • last, i wanted to seal the brick so that soot can be washed off after winter fires: i used a bm latex clear glaze and simply painted it on
  • that's it!!!!

because i like to repurpose perfectly good pieces, i also spruced-up our fireplace screen (original, circa 1928) by:

  • using our outdoor hose, i sprayed off all the dust & dirt
  •  i removed all the hardware
  • in a well ventilated area (my garage) i spray painted the old screen in flat black using Rust-Oleum (it took several coats)
  • while the paint was drying, i polished-up the original brass handles and monogram (yes, it is an "M",...a very cool coincidence-- "omen", wouldn't you say?) using Bar Keepers Friend (my go-to for a lot of household cleaning)

.................how a little TLC goes a loooong way!

this was my aim, my inspiration brick-- how do i compare?

image

~stay tuned for my next blog entry as i style our mantle (do you like the above mantle styling? simple is good, yet i am a bit more eclectic with my own)-- one of my favorite pastimes!

~happy weekend~

the tommy influence: as promised,........

a follow-up from last week!

i love fashion & believe strongly that fashion trends influence interiors,.... thus, this post. but, why TOMMY?  i like the quirkyness, the tongue-in-cheek, & style mix of retro prep-meets-slim aarons-meets-surfer vibe,.......

clearly-- a study in colors, patterns, personalities, landscape, lifestyle~

#1--  orangey-reds (not as tentative with this color anymore, used to be!)........

#2-- blues: a full range..............

#3-- pops of yellow (can't get enough yellow this season!).....

#4-- florals (have always loved & btw, floral chintz is back!!!)...

#5-- stripes (you know i can't deal without my stripes, right?).....

putting aside color, pattern, texture, it's a pervasive FEEL--a casualness, an ease, an off-handedness,

...inject a little TOMMY in your interiors~

just one last word...

mother-nature is the greatest inspiration (loving nature's stripes!)~

cb2 finds.............

...dont 'cha want to stroll in?

just in case you're saying-- who? what? where? when?
  • they are crate and barrel's hip little sis
  • first opened in chicago in 2000-- they now have 14 suburban stores: 2 in nyc (the closest to us), berkeley, san fran, la, santa monica, miami, atlanta, washington, dc, atlanta, minneapolis,... & 3 international posts
  • for clients seeking modern home design that's "clever and in the moment but with great attention to detail" & i will add: not all "modern"...you'll also find vintage, industrial... there's something for everyone
  • the price point is "smart",.. so we can "have it all and feel smart doing so."
  • they are a store with social conscience (always nice to know you are buying from good socially responsible companies, right?) they partner with 3 causes involving hunger, diversity & creativity thru the arts

let's start shopping,.............

#1-- wallpaper!  whaaat... did you say "wallpaper"? yup! new in their spring (S-P-R-I-N-G... yes, NOW, please!) 2014 catalogue:

innovative, sticky-backed, self-adhering papers at only $99.95 a roll (20.5"w x 396"l)-- no committment necessary.........

and they have a blank DIY self-adhesive paper for $56.00-- start creating!

dress-up those stair treads: first impressions are soooo important! what are you waiting for?

#2-- furniture, case goods........

swig (also in white) mini-bar: be your own mix-master, ta da!

or how 'bout the maitre wine bar ?

like this clever, off-the-floor storage shelf, their slice wall shelf (also in a red lacquered option).....

now i'm really loving this: the stella cabinet,... how about in the entry?

POW: the industrial powder-coated iron base & the colorful herringbone pattern on the doors!

#3-- more furniture, the cushy comfy kind.......

the biography chair & the study wingback chair

the gray bio chair would look perf sitting at the end of a long farmhouse table & the studywheat grass wingback, well,... just about anywhere-- love the sleek take on the old!

the movie persimmon sofa-- a knock-out!

yummy color combo of rusty orange and deep grey; i also love me a bench seat cushion!

#4-- lighting (& along with chairs, you know i'm a sucker for too),..........

the concrete wall sconce is a happening industrial lite & the swing arm wall sconce is elegantly pared down to what's important & a dead ringer for this more pricey version!

this marble floor lamp is minimalist, proficient & hip reminiscent of this one i have waxed on about  & the wildfire table lamp is pint-sized drama!

#5-- accessories,..... & i'm a sucker for textiles...

the focus placemat (do you use placemats? i do!) elevates your everyday white dinnerware, oh, & this pillow-the midnight flower pillow-pinks, gray, browns, & chartreuse (gotta have-- a spring pick-me-up!)~

...may as well set the rest of the table up, right?

candelabras are pure drama on a table, this one, labra holds 3 candelholder, gives us glass in place of  traditional silver (also comes in a 5 candle) & the flask vase take you pick of colors-- i'm going for the pink pop!

...can you tell i'm ready for spring flowers, colors, & brightness?

~spring is around the corner: the power of positive thinking~
